October’s Warrior – Joshua

“The most important thing in the world is family and love.” –John Wooden

Siblings Joshua and Winston certainly have a close-knit, loving family with 2 older brothers who live most of the year in Townsville  3-year-old Joshua is big brother to Winston who has a severe medical condition Little Winston was diagnosed with a brain malformation at his 6-week appointment.

In June his family started noticing seizures which were due to the brain malformation. Since then they have spent most of their time in hospital where they observed the EEGs increasingly go worse and in mid July they received the diagnosis of Early Infantile Epileptic Encephalopathy.

There has only been one night at home since then which ended with a hospital admission via ambulance the next morning.

There are limited options for family to care for Joshua so his routine has been thrown out the window spending time between daycare, friends, hospital and with family members. In amongst all of this, Joshua and Winston have also lost their granddad and Joshua is slowly starting to understand that granddad won’t come back from heaven but also questions why sick people go to heaven and don’t come back, knowing that his little brother has been in hospital for a long time due to being sick.

Winston receives various treatments, none of them really successful yet, is fed through a nasogastric tube and often relying on oxygen. He is also attending multiple therapy sessions a week.

Joshua’s mum and dad do their best to give him as much love and support through this journey and try to talk to him about his feelings as much as his age allows them to.

As can be expected Joshua struggles with the fact that his family has been separated during this time and is trying to find his place in this very complex puzzle showing clear signs of being emotionally drained.

Joshua loves anything to do with construction (particularly cranes), paw patrol and dinosaurs. At the moment Joshua is obsessed with the Lion King and loves to pretend that he is Simba. At daycare, he loves spending time with his best friend Tammo and he also had his first sleepover at a friend’s place recently. The other days Joshua spends with Uncle, Aunties and Grandparents who tag-team their visits from Austria.

Joshua loves construction, paw patrol, dinosaurs and the Lion King. He would love to hear from you!
